Self care for moms: 5 things every stay at home mom, work from home mom, or any parent should do for themselves each day if possible. Such great tips from a mom of three and WAHM for feeling like a human!

At first I titled this post 5 Things Every SAHM Needs to Do For Herself Everyday. But I didn’t want to exclude work from home moms. And just including moms that stay home excludes mothers who work outside of the home, and I didn’t want to do that either. And then I thought “don’t dads deserve these things too?” And yes, they do. We all do. So really this post applies to everyone, but I can only speak to my experience as a stay-at-home/work-from-home mother and my abilities to accomplish these 5 things and how much they help me when I do. But just know I think you all, we all, are deserving of feeling good and doing things for ourselves 🙂 So here are the 5 things I think we all can benefit from doing everyday, and that I know from personal experience we stay-home mommas sometimes struggle with doing for ourselves: 

  1. As soon as you wake up, think to yourself “what is the one thing that I need right now?”

Is it to sleep for a few more minutes? Drink a big ass cup of coffee? Whatever it is, do your best to give that to yourself before you give anything to anyone else. If you can’t, give it to yourself as soon as you are able. I’m usually woken up by Quincy every morning. He starts fussing and cries a little between 5 and 6 am. I always lay in bed for a few minutes to see if he’ll go back to sleep (he often does) and when I’m ready I get up and make my morning cup of coffee. I drink every single drop before I go get him out of bed. I need it and I’m better for having those 10 minutes to myself each morning.

2. Eat breakfast. And not the scraps of your kids’ breakfasts. And not 2 hours after everyone else does.

Nothing makes me feel crappier than two cups of coffee and no food, especially on very little sleep. Plus, I’m nursing and it is really important to start my day with a good breakfast. I eat the same thing every single morning, and I make it for myself after I get my boys’ breakfasts ready. I then sit with them and eat my chia oatmeal with a spoonful of all-natural peanut butter and a banana. Usually with my third cup of coffee. Is it the healthiest breakfast? No. But it’s not the worst either though. Is it the yummiest? No. I’d much rather have a giant chocolate croissant 🙂 But it is pretty yummy. And most importantly, it gets me through my morning and keeps me from getting hangry. Cause nobody wants to be around momma when she’s hangry 😉

3. Whenever possible, start your day with a shower.

I can’t tell you how many mornings I’ve woken up feeling so shitty that I thought there was no way I could make it through the day. Then, after I get the boys in their high chairs and they’ve eaten their breakfasts, I let them watch a little Blippi on the iPad and I hop in the shower. I feel like a NEW woman after. Sometimes a shower makes all the difference. If you can’t find time to shower or the thought of showering when you have kids at home is overwhelming (its something I NEVER did when I only had one baby — “what if he wakes up or starts crying!?”) then at least get dressed. Even if it just means you change into fresh sweats and a clean tee shirt.

4. Take a walk.

When things get overwhelming or exhausting or I find myself thinking the day is going really slowly, I pack the kids up in the stroller and we take a walk. The movement and fresh air are so good for me when I find myself in a mental rut. I almost always feel my mood improve and my spirits lift just by going for a walk.

5. Treat yo self.

Find little ways to reward yourself for getting through the tough stuff. Did you barely get any sleep last night? Take a nap when your little one does instead of folding laundry or doing whatever else you feel you have to do. Just try not to reward yourself with food every time — that didn’t work out so well for me this last year. But having a piece of chocolate or a glass of wine at the end of your day; taking a bubble bath or a nap when you get a break; putting on a nice robe or lighting a candle or meditating for ten minutes — treat yourself to a little something each day because what you are doing is hard. It’s amazing and wonderful and magical and really freaking hard.

  • This is my very favorite thing to use in the shower. It’s worth the price on Amazon, although if you live near a Trader Joe’s you can get it there for $6!
  • I’ve been cuddling with this blanket on the couch all week since I’ve been sick and it’s the best. Everyone in my house fights over it 🙂
  • This has been helping ease my aching muscles and stiff neck. It might be the best thing ever invented!
