When you have two little kids, sometimes you find yourself counting down the minutes till your spouse gets home from work. The days are long but the years are short, as they say, and “they” are right. Sometimes the days can be so long. For those of you with kids home for summer break, this can be especially true. My son Charlie had a two-week break from preschool recently. Since I also have a 10 month old who only naps in his crib, I couldn’t exactly take Charlie on fun adventures for the day — we were homebound for the morning and afternoons at nap time. But a four-year old has SO much energy and needs mini-adventures during the day. Basically if we stay home all day he goes a little nuts, and so do I. So I decided to make our everyday activities fun little adventures. This is how I turn a typical day with two little kids into a fun one for all of us.
When you need to stay close to home but also need a fun way to pass the time water play is always a hit. I often take our ducky tub, some bath toys, and snacks outside to the yard for a bathtime picnic. I usually put water in the tub, but on this day the afternoon had cooled off quite a bit so I decided to forego the water. And you know what? They had just as much fun! And nothing says fun like a bubble blower — always a kid crowd pleaser.
Munchkin’s snack catcher and no bite trainer cup are perfect for our front yard play or on the go for Calvin. And Charlie absolutely loves his miracle cup so he can drink “like a big boy” and I love that it doesn’t spill like a regular cup would.
We also love to take neighborhood walks. Calvin just chills out on our strolls, but sometimes Charlie needs something to make it a bit more fun for him. So we’ll pretend the stroller is a roller coaster and have fun going over the cracks and bumps in the sidewalks (LA has lots of tree root sidewalk damage that makes this easy!) I also create mini-scavenger hunts / I-spy game where we list off a bunch of things we’re going to hunt for (red car, pink flower, squirrel, cement mixer, hummingbird, etc.) and then we see how many we can find on our walk.
And do you want to know something that makes stroller walks more fun (and easy) for me? This stroller organizer. It holds 2 beverages, our sunscreen and hand sanitizer, my wallet when I don’t want to take a purse or big diaper bag, a couple extra diapers and has room to spare. Plus it has a wipes holder built-in for easy access and has a flap where you can insert your phone and keep it safe and protected, but still be able to use it without removing it. It’s brilliant and a lifesaver — truly a must-have accessory for every stroller.
I wish you all fun summer adventures and help on those ‘long’ days!
